Pizza has ancient roots. Its first version was similar to the traditional Focaccia, as the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks used to eat flatbreads with assorted toppings such as herbs, spices, garlic, and onion. Nevertheless,  pizza as we know it today, has its origins in the 17th century, in southwestern Italy's Campania region, home to the city of Naples. 
Even though there are several theories about when modern pizza was invented, the most popular story says it was created by the baker Raffaele Esposito. 
The Royal Palace of Capodimonte commissioned him to bake a special pizza in honor of the visiting Queen Margherita. Of the 3 different recipes, her favorite one was a pizza that evoked the Italian flag:  green (basil), red (tomato), and white (mozzarella cheese). This is why this kind of pizza was named after the Queen.
